The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) of Mexico has announced the adoption of the NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2017 regulation, effective from January 1st, 2025. This regulation sets stringent emission limits for new heavy-duty diesel engines and vehicles weighing over 3,857 kilograms. The primary goal is to reduce pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, non-methane hydrocarbons, and particulate matter, which are harmful to both the environment and public health.
The adoption of NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2017 aligns Mexico's standards with the more rigorous Euro VI and U.S. 2010 standards, ensuring a significant reduction in harmful emissions. This move is part of Mexico's broader commitment to combat climate change and improve air quality.
The implementation of this regulation will require manufacturers and importers to comply with the new emission standards, promoting the use of cleaner and more efficient technologies in the transportation sector. This is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and public health, contributing to a more sustainable future for Mexico.
